What Is Anesthesiology?

Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to the relief of pain and total care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesia, in the hands of qualified professionals such as anesthesiologist physicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), is a safe and effective means of alleviating pain during nearly every type of medical procedure.

Each year, millions of people in the United States undergo some form of medical treatment requiring anesthesia.

Three main categories of anesthesia are used in surgery and medical procedures, and there are many forms/uses of each. They are general, regional, and local anesthesia.

  • In general anesthesia, you are unconscious and have no awareness or sensations throughout your whole body. Some general anesthetics are gases or vapors inhaled through a breathing mask or tube and others are medications introduced through a vein.
  • In regional anesthesia, your anesthesiologist or CRNA makes an injection near a cluster of nerves to numb a particular region of your body. There most common types of regional anesthesia are spinal anesthesia and epidural anesthesia.
  • In local anesthesia, the anesthetic drug is usually injected into the tissue to numb just a specific location of your body.

At USAP-Indiana, we offer all three types of anesthesia, in a variety of settings. You’ll find our highly trained, respected physicians and CRNAs in hospitals, ambulatory/outpatient surgery centers, and office-based practices. We care about you while we care for you.
